After all the work in the preseason, round 1 is now behind us. We remembered our ANZACs, had wins and losses, and finished the day with a fantastic Family Night back at the club. This is what we love about footy at Macleod!
While rain had threatened, round 1 was completed in brilliant sunshine. We opened each game at The Nest by remembering the ANZACs, and were honoured to welcome Jeff Mawkes (President, Watsonia RSL) and his wife Tricia to the club to speak to our Colts players prior to their Division 2 game. Jeff spoke of the ANZAC spirit and how important it is to help and support your mates. This spirit was certainly on display through their solid win – so well done boys, and thanks Jeff for the inspirational talk!
What’s also been great to see around the club in the lead up to last week was the passion of the players and coaching staff to ensure we can put a team on the park. Our under 14s rose to the challenge of finding enough players to field a team, and came away with a memorable win. While we struggled for numbers in our Div 4 Colts side, the boys we had available joined with a number of opposition players to complete a “scratch match”, giving them the opportunity to play – which is of course why we’re all here. It’s great to see the boys making an effort to bring new faces to the club – thanks for your efforts!
As always, it’s so exciting to see the enthusiasm of the under 8s as they get started on their football journey. We had over 20 boys and girls play their very first competitive game in round 1! The expanded under 9 group both had good results, and the 10s, 11s, and 12s all got straight back into action, building on the work they did last year and over the preseason.
Off the field, we had our first Family Night for the year. The rooms were bursting at the seams for the meal and coaches reports, and a HUGE thanks to our BBQ cooks, salad chefs, bar staff, and all those who helped serve and clean up. We can’t run family nights without this help, so don’t be shy jump in and help! Stay tuned for news of our next family night, and other great social events we have planned.
Finally, we’re getting to grips with distributing the online merchandise orders, sports bags, training tops, playing jumpers, and all the other items that go along with running the club. If you have ANY issues, questions, or tips for how the club can improve – let us know. The committee welcomes new ideas, and is open and transparent in how we run.
Enjoy round 2, and Go Eagles!
