Under 12 Grand Final Report

Another terrific season for our under 12 side, resulting in a narrow Grand Final loss. Football isn’t all about winning and losing, and the team learned a lot throughout the year, and welcomed a few new players. Thanks to coach Nick Vass for providing the following report:

U/12 Blue Grand Final

Macleod v Glen Iris N

Firstly apologies to Paul Starmans…….it’s taken 4 weeks and 5 email requests for me to finally sit down and relive our Grand Final loss to Glen Iris. A coffee catch up with Leon Cameron is also planned!!!

Take the game in isolation and there’s disappointment….no doubt about that…. at an opportunity missed. But the big picture and reality points to a team that had an amazing season and exceeded everyone’s expectations even our most optimistic supporters could not have predicted we would start in Black division go up to Blue division finish on top of the ladder and play off in a Grand Final.

We had a two week build up to our Grand Final having beaten Glen Iris in the Second Semi Final by 9 points. We agreed to enjoy the experience and training followed a similar theme we trained twice a week with plenty of match practice and ball work…..come Grand Final day we were ready.

Telfer Reserve was bathed in sunshine with a tricky cross wind that favoured the far end. We lost the toss and kicked into the wind in the first quarter.

We came out of the blocks full of run and dominated Glen Iris early on…..Cooper Windebank was matched against Tom Groom in the ruck the two premier players of the competition. Cooper dominated early and our midfield were on top smashing Glen Iris in the clearances. Cooper Thompson as he did in the Semi Final kicked the opening goal of the quarter a set shot to give us the perfect start. Right on quarter time Ace Boag kicked an amazing running goal from the dead pocket into the wind and we went in at ¼ time 11 points ahead.

The second quarter was an arm wrestle we were not as efficient as we could have been but again managed to outscore Glen Iris when Ace Boag again ran onto a loose ball and drilled his second goal. Half time we went in 17 points ahead.

The 3rd quarter proved to be the decisive moment of the game. Glen Iris played the scoring end brilliantly and kicked 5 unanswered goals to completely stun us and we came in at ¾ time shell shocked and what just happened. All credit to Glen Iris they played the perfect quarter of football and set up their win.

The boys were shattered but steeled themselves for a final quarter tilt, we attacked all quarter but couldn’t manage to impact the scoreboard.

The final quarter was a nil all draw and we went down by 14 points.

We were brave and fought the game out but congratulations to Dave Groom and his boys thoroughly deserving premiers for season 2019. Special mention to Cooper Thompson and Oskar Silfverberg who saddled up straight after and played in the U/13’s premiership win……..Oskar fulfilled every young boys dream by kicking the winning goal in Grand Final!!! Oskar you can retire now a happy man!

Congratulations also to Tom Barca, Simon Knight and Cam Henry and their teams on winning premierships for the club. Fantastic achievement guys.

To our boys……congratulations on a terrific season we went on an amazing ride, I loved my time coaching this group of boys. As Tom Hafey famously said don’t just judge a team on premiership success judge a team on the expectations placed upon them. We aimed to win one game in Blue………….we ended up on top of the ladder and into a Grand Final.

What matters most at the end of the season is our boys continued to develop into fine young men who we should all be proud of. These boys epitomize everything that is great about our little club ….humble, hard – working and inclusive. These qualities were on display every week we pulled on the Eagles jumper.

Big thank you to our parents and families who supported us and cared for us all season I hope you enjoyed watching your boys each week.

Enjoy the summer break – let’s make 2020 another fun season where we learn, develop and more importantly continue to play football with a smile!

No talk of redemption or unfinished business that’s not what I’m about. As I mentioned on Presentation Day we were taught this year the most important life lesson football is just a game…..not life and death.
